How Treasure Coast Homeowners Can Get Help Paying for a Hurricane-Resistant Roof
Roof Financing
Roof Replacement
August 13,2026

Treasure Coast homeowners can get up to $10,000 toward a hurricane-resistant roof through Florida’s My Safe Florida Home grant. The state matches every dollar you spend 2-to-1, and low-income homeowners can qualify for the full amount with no match required. Start with a free wind mitigation inspection at mysafeflhome.com to see what your home qualifies for.
There’s real money sitting unclaimed for homeowners across Vero Beach, Fort Pierce, Port St. Lucie, and Stuart right now, and most people have never heard of it. The My Safe Florida Home grant can put up to $10,000 toward a stronger, more storm-resistant roof, but the program only works if you know it exists and how to apply for it.
Many contractors quote the job and never mention the paperwork, so homeowners end up paying full price for work the state would have partly funded. We think that’s a shame, and it’s part of why we walk every eligible Treasure Coast homeowner through the process before a single shingle goes on the roof.
What Is the My Safe Florida Home Grant, and Why Haven’t You Heard of It?
My Safe Florida Home (MSFH) is a state-funded program run by the Florida Department of Financial Services under Florida Statute 215.5586. It exists because Florida’s hurricane risk drives up insurance costs, and a stronger roof lowers that risk for everyone, including insurers. The program has two parts. First, you get a free wind mitigation inspection of your home. Second, if that inspection flags improvements you need, you can apply for grant funding to help pay for them.
The reason so few homeowners use it comes down to awareness. The application runs through a separate state portal, not through your contractor, and it takes a few extra steps most people never learn about. We build that guidance into every roofing conversation we have on the Treasure Coast, because leaving state money on the table doesn’t help anyone.
How Much Money Can You Actually Get for a New Roof?
MSFH works as a 2-for-1 match. For every dollar you spend on a qualifying improvement, the state adds two dollars, up to a $10,000 state contribution. Spend $5,000 on qualifying roof work, and the state adds $10,000 on top of it. That turns into a $15,000 project for $5,000 out of your pocket.
Think of it the way you’d think of an employer matching your retirement contributions. Your dollars go further because someone else adds to the pot, but you still have to put money in first. If your household income falls at or below 80% of your area’s median income, that match requirement disappears entirely, and you can receive the full $10,000 grant with no matching funds required.
If your share of the project costs more than you have on hand, that doesn’t have to stop the work. We offer financing options built around the MSFH match so a manageable monthly payment covers your portion while the state covers the rest.
Does Your Treasure Coast Home Qualify for My Safe Florida Home?

Eligibility comes down to a short list of requirements. Your home needs to meet all of them to receive grant funding, though the free inspection has looser rules.
- The home is your primary residence with an active Florida homestead exemption
- Your insured home value (Coverage A on your policy) is $700,000 or less, unless you qualify as low-income
- The home received its building permit before January 1, 2008
- The home is a site-built single-family residence, not a rental, condo, mobile home, or manufactured home
Priority goes to low-to-moderate income homeowners and homeowners over 60, but any homeowner who meets the criteria above can apply. If you’re not sure whether your home qualifies, checking takes a few minutes and costs nothing. Check Your Grant Eligibility.
What Roofing Upgrades Does the Grant Actually Cover?
MSFH funds five categories of hurricane hardening, and three of them are roofing work:
- Roof-to-wall connection reinforcement, which ties your roof structure more securely to your home’s walls
- Roof-deck attachment strengthening, which secures the plywood or decking beneath your shingles or metal panels
- Secondary water barrier installation, which keeps water out even if the outer roofing layer fails
The other two categories cover impact windows, doors, and garage doors, which matter too but fall outside roofing.
Some homes need more than a patch to meet these standards. If your existing roof is past the point where reinforcement makes sense, a full replacement is often the more practical path, and it opens the door to materials built for this kind of wind exposure. We’ve written more about how a metal roof holds up against hurricane-force wind and what repairs actually look like if you’re currently weighing your options.
How Do You Apply Without Losing Your Spot in Line?
The sequence matters here, and skipping ahead can cost you the grant entirely.
- Confirm your eligibility and request your free wind mitigation inspection through the state portal at mysafeflhome.com
- Wait for your inspection report, which typically arrives within 5 to 10 business days and lists your qualifying improvements
- Apply for grant funding based on what the report recommends
- Wait for your official grant approval letter before you sign a contract, order materials, or pay a deposit
- Hire a licensed Florida contractor to complete the approved work
- Submit your invoices and pass a final inspection to receive reimbursement
That fourth step trips up more homeowners than any other. An approved inspection is not the same as an approved grant, and starting work before your approval letter arrives will get your reimbursement denied. We tell every homeowner we work with to wait for that letter, even when it’s tempting to get started right away.
Why Work With a Contractor Who Already Knows This Program?
Grant paperwork isn’t complicated once you’ve done it a few times, but it’s easy to get wrong on your first attempt. Documentation has to match what the inspection report specifies, and your contractor’s license has to be verified and on file correctly.
Andy Keys leads FoxHaven Roofing personally, and he sits down with Treasure Coast homeowners to map out their MSFH application before any work starts. We’d rather spend an extra half hour explaining the grant process upfront than watch a homeowner miss out on $10,000 because a form got filled out wrong. Book a Roof Inspection today.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long does the My Safe Florida Home grant process take?
Inspection reports typically arrive within 5 to 10 business days of your visit. Grant approval timelines vary by cycle and funding availability, which is why applying early in a funding cycle matters.
Can I choose my own roofing contractor for MSFH-funded work?
Yes. You can hire any licensed Florida contractor whose license covers the type of work being done. The state doesn’t verify your contractor for you, so it’s worth confirming their license through MyFloridaLicense.com before signing anything.
Is the My Safe Florida Home grant a loan I have to pay back?
No. It’s a reimbursement grant, not a loan. You pay for the approved work upfront, submit your invoices after completion, and the state reimburses the matched amount.
Does the My Safe Florida Home grant cover a full roof replacement?
It depends on your inspection findings. The grant funds specific hardening improvements like roof-deck attachment and secondary water barriers. When your existing roof can’t support those upgrades on its own, a full replacement often becomes the practical way to qualify.
Does the grant cover metal roofing upgrades?
Metal roofing can qualify when it meets the roof-deck attachment and wind-resistance standards your inspection calls for. It’s one of the stronger options for Treasure Coast homes given how well it performs in high wind.
